Shuttle Viewing Part of Forum on NASA’s Need to Attract
Nation’s Top Math and Science Students

WHAT: America’s top young scientists, the 2004-05 Siemens Competition Team Winners Lucie Guo and Xianlin Li, and Siemens Foundation Chairman Thomas McCausland will attend NASA’s two-day event in Florida on October 22-23.

Mr. McCausland, Ms. Guo and Ms. Li will engage with NASA representatives during the forum on “Attracting Top-Performing Students to NASA STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Education Programs and Careers.” The forum’s participants will focus on identifying the nation’s top students, securing their interest in STEM coursework, and drawing them into the STEM workforce. In addition to the forum, all are to share the once-in-a-lifetime event of viewing the Space Shuttle Endeavor launch from the International Space Station in Florida.

In 2004-05 Lucie Guo and Xianlin Li, both of Durham, NC, won the $100,000 top prize in the Siemens Competition, the nation’s premier high school science competition.  The teens were awarded top honors in the team category for genetic research that could present potential new biomarkers for methods of early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Siemens Foundation Chairman Thomas McCausland will be on hand throughout the NASA forum and viewing. Mr. McCausland is a strong advocate for corporate America to support math and science education.
